In Roman times, Compostela was considered the end of the world. In Medieval times, the city was the destination of Christian pilgrims. You will ride along this most important cultural and spiritual route of Europe and participate in the pilgrim’s ceremony at Santiago’s cathedral. In addition, you will cross the basque lands to visit secluded medieval villages and significant historic remains.
Itinerary:
Day 1
You will transfer from the Santiago airport to your country guest house in O’Cebreiro
Day 2
After exploring Celtic remains, you will ride through deep forests of aged walnut, oak and chestnut trees to the historic village of Triacastela. The ride continues across the Oribio Valley to Samos. There you will visit the benedictine monastery and lodge in the Benedictine Hostelry.
Day 3
In the morning, you will ride through prairies and forests to Sarria to visit an old convent and medieval castle. Then you will descend into the Miño Valley for a visit to an old temple in Barbadelo. After a picnic lunch by an old water mill in Mercado Da Serra, you ride will cross the Belesar Reservoir to Portomarin. You will stay in the Portomarin Hotel.
Day 4
The ride will cross the Ulla Valley to Vilar De Donas to visit a notable Roman temple. This temple was the see of the military order of Santiago. You will stay in the Portomarin Hotel.
Day 5
Your trail will take you over the old stone bridge, past water-mills to the Pambre castle. After lunch, you will ride to Casteñeda to visit a medieval lime kiln which was used in the construction of Santiago’s cathedral. You will stay in an inn in Arzua.
Day 6
You will ride to Labacolla where pilgrims wash in the brook before visiting the sacred sepulcher at Santiago’s cathedral. Before you enter the town, your horse will take you to the top of Monte Do Gozo for a picturesque view of Santiago. After lunch, you will visit the cathedral. Your lodging will be a 3*** or 4**** hotel.
Day 7
After breakfast, transfer to airport.
