Be prepared to climb aboard coaches from yesteryear to be transported back in time as your drivers take you on a scenic drive through Bavaria. You will travel through medieval towns and along calm lakes, flowing rivers and quiet farming roads to King Ludwig’s famous castles nestled in the impressive Alps. Hearty traditional German cuisine will complete your immersion into the Bavarian culture and land.
Itinerary:
Day 1: Thursday (Pre-tour)
Transfer from Munich Airport to Kaiserin Elizsabeth Hotel in Feldafing
Day 2: Friday
You will be transferred from your hotel to the coaches. Your journey begins with a drive to over rolling hills to the Ammer Valley. A river road will take you to the small farm village of Eberfing for lunch. Afterwards, your coach will travel through rich farm land into stoic pine forests to Berysoine where you will behold a impressive view of the mountains.
Day 3: Saturday
You will follow the old Roman road, “Via Claudia Augusta” to the picturesque town of Saulgrub. You will retrace the steps of King Ludwig II as under the cloak of darkness, he hastened on the 120 year old King’s Road from castle to castle. Midday, you will arrive at Wies Church, the most beautiful rococo church in Germany, to dine in the former residence of the church’s builder. Then your coach will travel through solitary forests and across green mountain pastures with grazing herds of cattle and horses. Ludwig’s royal castles nestled in the Alps will come into view as you skirt around the pristine lakes of Forggensee and Bannwaldsee. Your accommodations is a lovely inn at the base of the Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau Castles.
Day 4: Sunday
After a visit to the castles, your route continues along the rolling Lech River. Lunch will be served in a charming country inn near Prem. The afternoon’s drive will meander through moorlands and the Dosswald forest. Your evening’s accommodation will be in a cozy inn in the medieval village of Schongau.
Day 5: Monday
The sound of your horses’ hooves on the cobblestone streets will be your farewell to Schongau as you leave the town for the for Wessobrunn, formerly a center for craftsmen and artists who created the churches, monasteries and castles. Your lunch will be in front of a former post relay station where lies a stone, circa 814 AD, with the oldest written document in the German language. You will cross the Ammer River valley and ascend a steep road into the Lerschlach forests.
Day 6: Tuesday
Transfer to the Munich Airport
